"Hurricane Katrina Dragon" - Satellite art by Peter Sforza

Many cultures have revered the dragon as a symbol of the powerful forces of nature and the universe. This power of nature humbled us as Hurricane Katrina made its landfall along the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005. Meanwhile, a storm system located north of the Great Lakes, even larger in extent than Katrina though seemingly less powerful and organized. While the Eye's of the World focused on the Gulf Coast, an ominous figure loomed among the Canadian clouds and is revealed in this historic moment through the large field-of-view of the MODIS sensor as the head of the Dragon Katrina, whose cyclonic tail unleashed its devastating force upon the Gulf Coast as Hurricane Katrina.
